Growing Older and Grumpier: 10 Things We’ve Grown to Despise
Aging is a journey of transformation, not just in appearance but in preferences too. Over time, our tastes shift, and things we once adored might become sources of annoyance. Recently, a lively online discussion shed light on this very topic, revealing a fascinating list of things that seem to irk individuals more with each passing year. These revelations offer a candid glimpse into the ever-changing landscape of our likes and dislikes as we journey through life.
1. Advertisements
Although being subject to advertisements is something you’d think we’d all be used to by now, many people profess straight-up hatred towards ads as they get older. Of course, nobody likes being advertised to – especially in today’s internet-focused world – but it hits even harder once you reach a certain age.
2. Dating
The dating world certainly seems much easier to navigate when you’re young, but as one person points out, it only gets more arduous as you age! “When I was 20, it was fun,” confesses one man. “Take ten minutes to get ready and have a good time. Now that I’m older, it’s a whole ordeal and feels more like a job interview.” Amen to that!
3. Alcohol
Technically, alcohol is a poison; countless people recall instances where they removed all forms of it from their lives. So naturally, as you get older, you start reassessing your health, and it’s only logical that alcohol is one of the first things to go.
4. Leaving the House
Although disliking leaving the house may seem comical, there’s some intelligent reasoning behind it. “It’s a coin toss as to what kind of day I’m gonna have every time I leave that front door,” reports one man. “But if I stay home, it’s always at least gonna be decent. I just don’t want to have bad days anymore.” You can’t argue with that logic!
5. Noise
There was a time when I routinely attended concerts knowing full well the high decibel levels would invariably damage my hearing. Decades later, I proudly stand with the countless men and women who dislike noise in all forms. I’m the type of person to wear earplugs when listening to live music – it’s just the safest course of action these days.
6. Technology
Despite living in the most technologically-advanced time ever, many are exhausted by modern technology and social media. “I used to be astounded and enthralled with all the rapidly-advancing tech when I was growing up and how it was supposedly ‘connecting’ everyone in society more and more.
I’d spend hours randomly scrolling on the internet when I was young,” confesses one woman. “Now, I realize most of it is just noise meant to distract us and generally causes more harm than good.”
7. Cold Weather
I don’t blame anyone for disliking cold weather at any point in their lives, let alone their golden years. As you age, you yearn for a comfortable, temperate climate devoid of freezing temperatures and possible snow shoveling. Florida is a preferred destination for many boomers because of these reasons.
8. Humanity in General
Thanks to a nonstop onslaught of political discourse, targeted ads, and angry people, it’s no surprise that some people are just burnt out on humanity in general. “I feel like animals are much more humane to be around than humans,” explains one man. “It’s sad because I used to love connecting with humans, but now it feels like a chore and very superficial.”
9. Malls
For many, some of the best childhood memories come from spending time at the local mall with friends. But, unfortunately, that isn’t the case in 2023. Countless people admit to being sick and tired of the mass commercialization in society, and as a result, these people vow never to step inside a mall again.
10. Living in a City
Living in a bustling city is exciting, adventurous, and magical at the same time – if you’re younger. However, for older people, spending an extended period in a city means dealing with noise, traffic, and too many people!
