Saying goodbye to a pet (even if it’s just for a few minutes or hours) seems like it should be an easy task. However, any pet owner knows it’s borderline impossible at times! Recently, men and women met in an online discussion to reveal their heartwarming farewell rituals every time they have to say goodbye to their furry friends.
1. Pick One To Be in Charge
Nothing is cuter than humans acting like their pets are little humans! Many multiple pet owners confess they verbally choose one animal to be in charge while they’re gone in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. However, one woman takes it one step further, to hilarious results: “I secretly pick them both to be in charge of the other,” she slyly confesses. Hey, you must keep them on their toes!
2. Remind Them of the Rules
Many owners have fun with saying goodbye to their pets and jokingly “remind” them of the house rules. It’s common for men and women to tell their pets that no parties are allowed while they’re gone and “You’re the man of the house until I return.” I like to think the pets take these rules to heart; after all, I’ve never heard of dogs throwing wild parties while they’re home alone, have you?
3. A Lot of Hugging and Petting
There’s nothing wrong with giving your pet plenty of hugs and kisses before you leave the house! Countless pet owners confess this is their go-to maneuver when breaking bad news to their dogs. Fortunately, this explosion of puppy love makes their absences seem less traumatizing for the pups! It’s not the worst strategy I’ve ever heard; kill them with kindness, as they say.
4. The Door Ritual
Sometimes, our pets need a helpful reminder that we’re not leaving forever before they stop panicking and let us go. “My cats totally know when I’m leaving, and they wait for me to acknowledge I’ll be back before they stop waiting by the door,” explains one woman. I love how they need reassurance before they can stop freaking out! How adorable is that?
5. A Dog’s Adorable Ritual
I love reading about dog’s unique rituals around the house. One owner reveals his pet definitely has a routine! “When I tell my dog I have to go, she stops getting excited and turns around and goes into her bed or the couch to lie down,” reveals one man. “They 100% understand. When I’m only going for an hour, I say I will get food and return. I’m convinced she knows the difference and that it means I won’t be long.” Sounds like an intelligent dog!
6. The Sad Puppy
Unfortunately, not all puppies react in a positive manner when their owners say goodbye temporarily. One woman reveals that her three-year-old golden retriever gets the most pained look on his face and crumbles into a ball when she realizes her owner is about to leave the house. I don’t know whether this is adorable or straight-up sad!
7. The Furlorn Kitten
I am intrigued by this cat who gets seriously annoyed whenever her owner doesn’t make her aware of his plans for the day! “I always say goodbye because I genuinely have to,” admits one woman. “If I don’t say goodbye to my one cat or make sure she knows I’m leaving, she’ll throw a tantrum and absolutely annoy my girlfriend all day. She’s improved since we moved into a bigger house, but in our old apartment, she would stomp around and meow at full volume for hours.” I’ve never met this cat, but I love her wholeheartedly.
8. A Good Cry in the Car
The bond between a human and their pet is unbreakable. I was shocked to discover how many people confess they are often brought to tears when saying goodbye to their furry friends, even going as far as admitting they cry in the car while they’re driving away. It’s a testament to the joy both parties bring into each other’s lives.
9. The Heartbroken Pet
Some dogs suffer from separation anxiety, and there’s nothing you can do but accept that you must leave your pet in a heartbroken state until you return! “I have a dog, and he tends to be very clingy,” explains one woman. “So, whenever I go out, I tell him that I’ll be back. It stops him from jumping on and clinging to me, and then he just starts sitting by the door. It breaks my heart, but what can I do? I have to be somewhere else.”
10. Start the Waterworks
While the wailing of a dog doesn’t have the same effect as a human bursting into tears, it is just as challenging to handle! Many pet owners confess their dogs will howl or cry for hours if they leave their sides, making for an awkward situation. As a result, many neighbors complain about the noise from these stressed-out pets.
