Putting Jesus at the Wheel
There’s a country song called “Jesus Take the Wheel” and I’ve always loved it. In the song she loses all control and cries out for Jesus to take over and it’s a good reminder of what he can and will do. But I’ve been thinking about putting Jesus at the wheel to begin with.
Instead of waiting until everything is spinning out of control to ask Jesus to take over, why don’t we let him take over now before things get out so crazy? By giving him control, we never actually lose it. Because we cannot lose something we don’t have.

Unfortunately that means I’m not good at sitting back and letting God happen either.
What if I put Jesus at the wheel of my life now though? What would happen?
I’ll tell you what won’t happen:
- I won’t need to worry about the future
- I won’t need to worry about where we will live
- I won’t need to worry about my kids
- I won’t need to worry about my marriage
- I won’t need to worry
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
Matthew 6: 30-32
Is that the key? Is my stress and anxiety a direct result of my tightly hanging on to the steering wheel and refusing to give it all over to God? I would say yes.
There have been times when all looked well on the outside but I was falling apart inside. And times when the outside was falling apart and strangely enough I had peace because I knew God was in control.
I’m a control freak and I’ll admit it. I like to have a plan and know everything’s going according to plan. But the problem is, I really am not in control at all. Even when things are going well.
At the end of the day, only God is in control and if I am putting Jesus at the wheel, then at least I know and am acknowledging who really is in control. And that’s all that matters.
What about you? Are you putting Jesus at the wheel in your life, or are you a bit like me and struggle just a little too hard to hang onto it for yourself?
