Quitting With a Bang: 11 Legendary Ways Coworkers Bid Adieu to the Office
We all fantasize about the mic drop job departure, but sadly, not many get to relive it. My favorite is the lottery-winning trope in The Office: An American Workplace when the warehouse workers’ consortium hits the jackpot. However, we live these moments vicariously after reading these insights from a recent online discussion.
1. Too Many Patients Cause Impatience
After hearing this commenter’s sad story, you must spare a thought for emergency room nurses. His nursing colleague snapped after a patient, who had been waiting 72 hours for long-term nursing home care, was left unwashed, unattended, and given to her. On top of this, a pregnant mother with extreme depression symptoms, then a patient covered in human waste. Her final straw was when a director called her lazy for complaining about her roster.
2. A Love Letter
When an intern’s boss had enough of how their company treated them both, he scored a new job at a Fortune 100 company. He emailed the team, explaining his reluctance to leave, how he loved his team, and gave thanks. However, when the directors told him he had to write a formal letter, he obliged and showed it to the storyteller. The letter was an epic roast of everything wrong with the company and its directors.
3. Mic Drop With a Trash Can
Working in a mid-nineties Louisiana movie theater was hard work in the summertime, according to someone who witnessed their colleague’s epic quitting. After the street-sweeping truck failed to clean the theater parking lot, an apathetic boss told the new girl to go outside and pick up the trash. Begrudgingly, and after the observer told her not to, she went outside in 100 degrees of summer heat, picking up diapers, discarded food, and popcorn boxes before bringing the bag into the boss’s office and unloading it on his head.
4. You Clean It Up
Can you imagine being the only person left behind after a Taco Bell closes at 10 p.m. after a 15-strong crowd of high school footballers comes and trashes the restaurant? One poor fellow managing a chain received orders to clean the entire restaurant himself — unpaid — once the mad herd departed. He kindly told the owner to clean it himself, then locked the doors and resigned. There is only so much you can take.
5. A Warehouse Tyrant Gets His Comeuppance
Working in central Canada leaves you at the whim of the elements, which means heavy snow over a long winter. A warehouse worker was tasked with collecting shopping carts from the snow-covered parking lot, even though he was working the shop floor and wearing indoor shoes. After obliging, his supervisor threatened to send him home if he didn’t move his behind faster with the carts, which proved difficult with such footwear. Spoiler alert: the worker told the tyrant something colorful they could do with their behind and left the building.
6. Extortion Pays
One tech worker recalls a highly gifted programmer who had such talent he was the equivalent of three workers but was expensive, and the company wanted a cheaper replacement. After getting wind of his impending departure, he remote-controlled a server and encrypted the company’s databases before receiving his marching orders. Employees soon learned the company paid him off in exchange for the server passwords. This guy sounds like a real-life Bond villain.
7. A Blaze of Glory
In a scene reminiscent of a coming-of-age teen movie, an early nineties worker sets the scene for a service worker who had had enough of her nagging manager. After the boss told her to redo a room, the girl shook her head and left. Hilariously, her next move was to drive around the parking lot, hitting her horn and screaming profanities about the hotel.
8. An Executive Decision
After botching a job for a consultancy firm, an executive knew his days were numbered. So, after receiving a call from the head office telling him to return to the office immediately, he obliged. Controversially (but brilliantly), he booked an expensive helicopter ride back across the city, charging it to the business account. Well, they did say to get there immediately!
9. A Goodbye Gift
In a scenario not for the squeamish, an office worker explains the dreadful end to his colleague’s tenure after being hosed down in a team meeting for somebody else’s mistake. Later that evening, he waited until his boss left the office before leaving a rather “personal” gift on his expensive new chair. Then, into his “offering,” he poked his office I.D. and business credit card and placed his laptop and keys beside it. Professional.
10. The D.J. Has Left the Party
A former D.J. at a hole-in-the-wall dive bar was upset when his boss banned drinking on the job, as punters usually buy the D.J. a drink when they make a request. Finally, after having had enough of working there, he put on one last profanely titled record aimed at his boss before departing the stage and walking out. This one’s for you, boss.
11. Midnight Runners
Having worked in the international teaching industry for many years, I have seen my fair share of midterm runners, depending on the country. We started with 15 foreign teachers at my first post: an international language school in Cairo. However, once we realized the boss was a sadistic bully, people began dropping like flies. The best one was the principal himself, who one day just got up from his chair, ghosted down the hallway without looking at or speaking to anybody, and let himself out, never to be seen again.
