Leadership Red Flags: 7 Behaviors That Clearly Say ‘I’m a Bad Leader!’

RED FLAGS

No one wants to be a lousy leader. However, as we interact in the workplace, we start noticing qualities in our leaders that we appreciate and those that we may not. While the good outweighs the bad for some leaders, in others, we struggle to find any good.

“People that think fear is the same as respect,” said an online user. Some leaders think instilling fear in their teams is the best way to make them submit to authority.

Instilling Fear

You’re sometimes wrong! As a leader, you should be open to constructive criticism. Even if you put out an idea you think is right, give your team time to contribute and express their thoughts.

An “I’m Always Right” Attitude

“‘Sorry,’ one simple word you’ll never hear from a bad leader,” reminded a female user who had to deal with a lousy leader. Several other users found this statement true, with one additional online user saying, “I worked under a bad leader for many years.

Inability To Apologize

Another user said it best when she shared this statement, “We need everyone to come back into the office, even though you’re doing great work at home, and it would be cheaper if you didn’t come in because we could sublease this space to some other business, everyone needs to get back to the office, or you’re fired!” This is how bad leaders work.

Condescending Attitude

“Bad leaders struggle to listen and communicate. They’ll overtalk everyone else, not take time to process information, and honestly are a headache to be around,” said a platform member.

Poor Communication

Leaders who can’t think strategically will not know the practical steps to fulfill their objectives. This will lead to confusion in themselves and the team at large. Ideally, anyone in charge should steer their team to success, but bad leaders aren’t capable.

Lack of Strategic Thinking

“Time is everything when you are planning work projects. Bad leaders will let you waste time on things that don’t even matter, and by the end of the day, you won’t accomplish anything,”
