10 Secret Fears Shared by Women on the Path to Motherhood

Motherhood is a beautiful and transformative journey in a woman’s life, but what no one seems to talk about is the toll it takes on parents, and especially the mother. While they’re excited and thrilled about the bundle of joy, mothers hide their deepest fears in the quiet corners of their hearts. Here are ten secret fears shared by women on their path to motherhood.

1.  Not Being Capable Enough

When you’re about to have a child, you often fear that you’re just not capable enough to take care of another human being. Raising a kid is no easy feat, and the fear of being solely responsible for another soul is very real. You need to ensure that you’re mentally, physically, and emotionally available so that you can be your best self for the incoming human.

2. Repeating the Cycle

As we go out into the world, our habits, attitudes, and thoughts all change drastically due to the influence of the world. A big fear for pregnant women is that their kids will end up having the same attitude as them. Sometimes, we’re a bit hotheaded or have generational trauma passed down to us that we just don’t want our kids to mimic or endure.

3. Promising Financial Stability

Everyone wants their children to live the best life possible, whether it comes to top-notch education, a wardrobe full of clothes and toys, or all the latest gadgets. Not being able to provide for your kid financially is scary because even if you have money right now, there’s no guarantee of the future.

4. Not Raising Them Right

Have you ever met people who just leave a sour taste in your mouth, and you wonder who raised them? This is precisely what soon-to-be mothers are terrified about. No one wants their child to step into the world and be impolite and disrespectful because that somewhat boils down to your parenting style. But raising someone perfect is unrealistic as well.

5. Experiencing Infertility and Health Complications

More women than you know suffer from infertility, where they are just not able to have kids. Hormonal problems like PCOS can often cause specific issues which make having children very difficult. This is a genuine fear as people have to go through challenging processes like IVF coupled with several complications, even if they do end up getting pregnant.

6. Not Being Able To Give Kids Exposure

For years, mothers have commonly struggled with communicating vital things to their kids as they simply don’t know how to. Talking about hormones, body awareness, puberty, and many similar topics with your kids is not easy. Some people are even afraid of having the birds and the bees conversation because their parents never talked to them about it either.

7. Losing Their Career

Traditionally, women are seen as the primary caretakers of children, while men are the breadwinners. However, nowadays, women are following their career aspirations just as much as men.

This makes some people fear losing their careers when kids tag along. However, they also don’t want to feel guilty about not being there for the child as they work. It takes a lot of strength and sacrifice to manage both side by side.

8. Becoming Stereotypical

Since society often dictates that women must have kids, this fear is pretty natural. Having kids and a family is stereotypical, and no one wants to be seen as just another sheep in the herd. But just because you’re having a baby doesn’t mean that you’re suddenly going to fit in this cookie-cutter mold.

9. Losing Their Individuality

You’ll often hear people say that once you have a child, you’re a unit. While that’s true, it doesn’t mean that mothers aren’t individuals anymore. They still have a life, friends, social needs, and hobbies that they need to cater to. Responsibilities do increase, but you should always take some time for yourself and your personal needs.

10. Undergoing Bodily Changes

It’s a known fact that pregnancy changes your body in a lot of ways. A woman’s body endures a lot of trauma during childbirth, leading to several health problems later on. This is one of the reasons why having a baby sounds terrifying to some because they don’t know whether it’ll lead to further complications.
