Simply Made Sunday: $15 Rustic Nightstand
Welcome to Emily’s Simply Made Series! Each post features a craft that looks cute or is practical, but is easy enough for even the uncraftiest of people. Cute DIY things are NOT just for the pros! You can do it too!
When I was looking to finish the guest room in my new home, I knew I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on furniture but that didn’t mean I didn’t want something that looked good. We bought and re-finished a Craigslist dresser and re-covered our upholstered headboard for a new look, but I needed some nightstands. I looked EVERYWHERE for the perfect nightstands, fully wanting to re-finish them. It never happened.
But then I came across a picture on the internet of a makeshift nightstand, made using wooden wine boxes, and it got me thinking of what I could use to make my OWN nightstands!
Lightbulb. I have been looking for something to make with these unfinished milk crates JoAnn Fabrics carries. They are so cute, and we even used them for my sister-in-law’s baby shower as pedestals for food!
I used coupons (JoAnn has an app that you can actually use coupons right from your phone!) for 40-percent off, and just bought them one at a time so I could get them all for almost half off! This made them $6 each! STEAL.
Just paint or stain them with your choice of color (I bought a small can of Minwax’s Dark Walnut stain for $3).
Sand and seal if you like.
Stack one on top of the other, using wood glue to hold them together! Screw them together for added security, but it’s not needed … I actually had them just sitting on each other for a while with no issues!
Needed Materials
2 Unfinished Milk Crates
Stain or Paint of your choice
Wood Glue
Screws/Nails (optional)
We made two nightstands, costing us a whopping $27 total! Easy, cheap, and no one has to know they didn’t come from Pottery Barn!
We think imitation is the BEST form of flattery! If you make this or any of my Simply Made Sunday projects, come by and post a picture of it on our Facebook page! We want to see!
