31 Days of Halloween: DIY Max Costume

Where the Wild Things Are is one of my favorite children’s books of all time, so I was very excited to make my son a Max costume for Halloween this year! I am not the craftiest of people, but you’ll find that this costume is very easy and absolutely adorable. It’s perfect for those of us who like making their children’s costumes, but can’t make complex patterns. Last year, I made him an easy, yet cute as a button lion costume.
Materials:
- White footed and hooded pajamas (I found mine here)
- Fuzzy white felt
- 4 buttons
- Faux fur
- Gold/yellow/orange felt (I let my son pick out which color to use for Max’s crown)
- Needle and thread
- Optional: Fabric glue
- Craft wire
Step 1
Using the fuzzy white felt, cut out ears and claws for the hands. I did not use a pattern, but did draw and cut the size I needed on paper first to make sure the size was accurate for my son’s hand and head.
Step 2
Sew and/or glue the claws and ears onto the pajamas.
Sew on four buttons to the front of the pajamas.
Step 4
Measure your child’s head. Cut the orange felt in a crown shape. Sew the ends of the crown together, and then add faux fur around the bottom.
Using faux fur, sew a strip for the tail on the back of the pajamas.
Step 6
Cut the bottom off of feet off the footed pajamas so your child can wear shoes with the costume. If desired, add a piece of elastic to keep the claw secure with the foot. Then shape the top of the feet into claws.
Step 7
Cut four pieces of copper wire about 8-10″ and bend the pieces in half. Slide both ends of the wire through the hood to make Max’s whiskers. By having both ends come out as whiskers, they won’t poke your child on the inside of the costume.
