Simply Made: DIY Statement Beach Hat

I don’t know about you but I have beach vacations on my mind. I am ready for the sun and sand like you won’t believe.

When Jasmine and I went with our families to Beaches Turks & Caicos in October, we wanted something a little fun and personalized for our trip and settled on creating our own beach hats with our names on them. After testing a few ways to make them, we settled on this method to create the best look for the hats…

WHAT YOU NEED:
Beach Hat
Pencil
Black Paint (acrylic or fabric paint)
Thin Foam Tipped Paint Brush
3/4″-1″ Black Ribbon
Scissors
Hot Glue/Gun

HOW TO MAKE IT:
We started with a beach hat. We found these at Old Navy on clearance and were the perfect size brim AND they came in different head sizes-something this gal appreciates with a large head.

I sketched each of our names onto a hat with a pencil. If you aren’t confident in your handwriting skills then you can always print out what you want onto paper and trace it through the paper (the paper will rip, allowing the pencil to come through to the hat) onto the hat.

Next, take black paint (I used acrylic but you could use fabric paint as well) and a foam tipped paint brush

and start dabbing the paint along the pencil lines. Make sure you press down a bit as you go so that the paint can fill into the straw lines.

Dab as if you are trying to make a line of dots along the pencil lines.

Once you’ve painted along all of your pencil lines, let the paint dry.

Next, we measured a length of black 3/4 inch black ribbon around the brim of the hat and cut it about 3/4 inch longer than the brim.

Then, we added hot glue to one of the ends of the ribbon and stuck it to the hat.

Wrapping the ribbon around the hat, we hot glued it down about every inch or two. At the end of the ribbon, glue it down over top of the start of the ribbon wrap and let it cool.

Then take your fun new hat to show it off at the pool or the beach! Here is my hat:
