Stop Spending Money on Expensive Nursing Camis: Check out this DIY Nursing Cami Tutorial!

Oh the joys of breastfeeding your baby in public!
I always envy moms that can successfully breastfeed in public. They look so graceful doing it, like a pro. What breastfeeding class did they sign up for? I sure missed out.
Take a look at me out in public and I am a hot mess. Look closer, sometimes I sweat a little. It isn’t fair that I have a wiggly five-month-old under a nursing cover and his two-year-old brother who thinks it’s time to play hide and seek with his little brother the second I begin nursing.
There are a lot of things that go through my mind when I have to nurse in public. Nursing moms are always criticized for feeding in public and it can make you feel like you’re doing something wrong. That issue doesn’t bother me much, because frankly I think most teenage girls show more skin than what a mother nursing her baby shows. My biggest fear is that I’ll expose my not-so-perfect post-partum mommy belly when I go to lift up my shirt to feed my son. You know, the one with rolls and purple stretch marks?
Did you know they sell these wonderful things called nursing camis? It amazes me that I just discovered this necessity. You’re able to pull your shirt up and your nursing cami will still hide those mommy tummies—just what I need. However, I’m on a budget these days and a recent trip to Target made me realize how expensive they are. You can also purchase them online but at some places they cost as much as $35. Yikes! I don’t know about you, but that seems a little crazy for something that goes underneath my clothes!
Well mamas, I was in “Pinterest land” when I discovered a DIY nursing cami. It looked super simple to make and costs way less. I was hooked! Let me begin by just saying that I do NOT sew … I’m almost positive my husband could have even figured this one out.
The Supplies:
- Cami in a color of your choice. Do not buy one with a built in bra or shelf.
- Seam Ripper
- Scissors
- Coordinating thread
- Hand needles
I spent about $8 on all of my supplies, including my cami I found on clearance for $4.00!
Step 1:
Begin by using the seam ripper to take apart the thread that attaches the straps to the camisole in the back. Be very careful in doing so.
Step 2:Â Once both straps are detached from the back of the cami, use scissors to trim the strap down so that only about two inches are left.
Step 3:Â Make a loop and secure with thread using hand needles.
Step 4:Â Attach loops to your nursing bra clips.. This will keep the cami from falling down. The back of your cami will look like a halter.
When you are ready to nurse, simply pull up your t-shirt and unclip your nursing bra and the cami loop you created. You are now ready to nurse in public, without exposing your tummy! 🙂
