In my family, Thanksgiving is the most important holiday we celebrate. It’s a time we can get together as a family, reflect on the past year and appreciate one another.
Growing up, my mom would always remind us of the importance of Thanksgiving and spending it with our family and loved ones. I never really understood why it meant so much to my parents when I was a child. One year my mom decided to tell me why Thanksgiving was so important to them. My dad grew up really poor. They couldn’t afford Christmas, but always managed to have a Thanksgiving dinner. It was one of the only holidays he was able to celebrate as a child, so it meant a lot to him. Once I learned that, Thanksgiving quickly became one of my favorite ones to celebrate. It became more than just food, it was a time to really be thankful for the life my dad created for us and the life I am now able to give my children.
Now that I am a mom, my appreciation for Thanksgiving has only grown. I have wonderful in-laws and beautiful children to add to my thankfulness. Being Puerto Rican, our Thanksgiving dinners tend to be a little different than most. We serve a lot of Puerto Rican dishes like arroz con gandules, pastelles, bacalao, and tostones. However we still incorporate traditional dishes like turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.
This year I am hosting dinner at my house. I am keeping things simple and trying to add a healthier touch to some of the dishes. One of my husband’s favorite things to eat during Thanksgiving dinner is cranberry sauce. Seriously, he loves it! However I am not a fan of the amount of sugar it takes to make cranberry sauce. So instead of adding regular sugar to our homemade cranberry sauce recipe, I am substituting with Monk Fruit In The Raw®.
Monk Fruit In The Raw® Zero Calorie Sweetener has the closest taste to sugar of any non-caloric sweetener with the least aftertaste. Because of its sweet, clean taste, Monk Fruit In The Raw® can be substituted for sugar in almost any recipe. It also tastes great when sprinkled directly on fruit or cereal.
Monk Fruit In The Raw® is a great substitute in cranberry sauce and you won’t be able to taste a difference.
In The Raw®, where sweetness runs in the family.
