Modern Diaper Cake Tutorial

One of the most popular baby shower trends is diaper cakes. Not only is it giving the new mom-to-be an adorably packaged necessity, but it can be used as part of the baby shower decor. If you plan to make a diaper cake, try sticking to the baby shower or nursery theme. The mom-to-be can place it in the nursery until it’s ready to be used.
Diaper cakes can seem a bit overwhelming, but when you break down the steps, you realize just how simple they are to create and customize. We created a gorgeously modern and gender-neutral diaper cake by sticking with our Milk and Cookies-themed baby shower.
What you will need:
- 16″ cardboard cake round
- 93- size 1-2 Huggies diapers (52 for the bottom layer, 27 for the middle layer, 17 on top)
- One bottle of champagne or sparkling cider ( a special gift for the mom-to-be)
- 100 large rubber bands
- Three wooden skewers
- Two rolls of ribbon of your choice (3-4 yards)
- Hot Glue Gun/Hot Glue
Directions:
Step 1:
The first thing you will need to do is roll your diapers. Starting at the open end of the diaper, roll your diapers and then secure them with a rubber band. Repeat until all diapers are rolled and secured. 93 diapers may seem like many diapers to roll, but it goes by fast.
Step 2:
Put together the base for your diapers to go around. For the base, you will take your 16″ cake round and hot glue the bottom of the champagne bottle to the cake round.
Adding a nice bottle of champagne is our preferred choice! It’s great to support for the diaper cake and a nice surprise for the mom-to-be.
Step 3:
Now it’s time to start layering on the diapers. Keeping the seams of the diapers in towards the champagne bottle, line one layer of diapers around the champagne bottle and secure the layer by placing one large rubber band around the diapers and champagne bottle.
Repeat this step until you have three rows of diapers for the bottom tier, like in the photo above. Since the bottom tier is the largest, we found a trick to help the outer layer. Before placing the rubber band around the entire outer layer of diapers, place only a few diapers in the outer layer and slip the rubber band over. Then, fill the diapers into the rubber band until your outer layer is complete. We used 52 rolled diapers for this tier.
Step 4:
For the second tier, add in skewers for extra support. Stick the skewers in the diaper cake as close to the champagne bottle as possible and poke the bottom of the skewer into the cake stand to secure it.
Start to layer diapers on the second tier, adding only two rows of diapers. When adding the diapers to the second tier, slip a diaper over each skewer. We used 27 rolled diapers for this tier.
Step 5:
Now it is time to add on the top tier of your diaper cake. For this tier, we used 17 rolled diapers.
Step 6:
Add ribbon around your diaper cake tiers and hot glue to secure.
Step 7:
Decorate the cake as you like (The fun part.)
