The Very Hungry Caterpillar Birthday Bash Food!

ByGuest Updated onMarch 31, 2023 Everyday

This is part 2 of a 3 part series on throwing an amazing Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday party. Read part one here.

When figuring out what foods I wanted to prepare, I of course decided to focus on the colors red and green (like the caterpillar in the book) and designing things around the idea of butterflies and caterpillars. Here are the things I made for the party.

Butterfly Cheese and Crackers:

I bought butterfly crackers to make a cheese and cracker tray to go along with the caterpillar/butterfly transition in the book the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Cheery and Grape Caterpillar Kabobs:

This is so simple and cute! I used the short lollipop/cake pop sticks that you can find in the cake decorating section of the grocery store. On each stick, I put three green grapes and a fresh cherry. I love that the cherry stem resembles the antenna!

Very Hungry Caterpillar M&Ms

I bought some simple, green and red bowls at the dollar store (they came in packs of 3, so it only cost $2 for all the bowls needed). You can order specific color M&Ms, but I just bought the largest bag of M&Ms at the store and sorted through for the colors needed: green and yellow for the body, red for the head and two brown for the eyes. I used pipe cleaners for the antenna. The best part of buying an entire bag of M&Ms and not using them all is that there are the leftovers to munch on.

Green and Red Mini-Sandwich Wraps

Using spinach wraps (for green) and tomato wraps (for red), I made turkey wraps. You, of course, can make whatever types of sandwiches your family enjoys. I cut the full wraps into bite sized snack wraps to make the perfect party treat.

Cake and Smash Cake

My sister-in-law made the adorable cakes! On the big cake for everyone, around the edge are gumballs (like the polkadots at the beginning and end of the Very Hungry Caterpillar book). Since I didn’t want to give my 1-year-old gumballs, I used Spree’s around the edge.

Stay tuned for part 3 tomorrow-Party decorations!
