Easy Strawberry Shortcake
Â
Nothing says summer like strawberry shortcake. Perfect for a backyard barbecue or just for the kids as a weeknight treat, this dessert comes in many forms.
On occasion I make it biscuit-style with a mix. But this recipe of my grandma’s is my favorite way to make shortcake, and it’s homemade—no mix necessary! It’s a dense, moist cake that’s not overly sweet and is great with strawberries and little milk poured over the top.
Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup milk
- 3 tablespoons shortening
- Strawberries, sliced and tossed with a little sugar
Directions
- Grease pie pan or eight-inch cake pan and preheat oven to 400.
- Sift dry ingredients together.
3. Cut shortening into dry mixture, combining until mealy.
4. Add milk and mix by hand.
5. Spread batter into pie pan and bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown on top.
6. Serve with strawberries. Pour desired amount of milk over cake or top with whipped cream.
