Homemade Eggnog Recipe – Egg Yolk Benefits
I’ve been told that eggnog is only good around the holidays. In my opinion that’s just not true! I love eggnog all year round so today I’m sharing my homemade eggnog recipe.
Rich, creamy milk, egg yolks, vanilla, maple syrup and a few spices make this delectable drink something to crave. My toddler will chug a glass of it faster than anything else too.
I promise. Once you try my homemade eggnog you won’t ever want that stuff sold in stores again!
Wait! Are you eating RAW eggs?!
Why yes. Yes I am.
Raw egg yolks to be exact and I cannot wait to tell you just how good they are for you!
Raw egg yolks, like raw milk contain enzymes that help us assimilate them and properly absorb all the wonderful nutrients. Cooked egg yolks alter the nutrients and while cooked eggs are still nutritious, you could call a raw yolk a superfood!
What about salmonella?
Dr Mercola’s website states that only 1 in 30,000 eggs have a salmonella problem. That number is even less when talking about fresh eggs.
Since most eggs are 1-2 weeks old before they ever hit the grocery stores, I don’t eat raw eggs from the grocery. I buy them from a local farm where I know they are less than a week old. You can find farms local to you by visiting www.localharvest.org.
So how are raw egg yolks a superfood?
- 100% dv of Vitamins A, E, D, and K. These are fat soluble meaning they are easily absorbed by your body.
- Also contains 100% dv of the essential fatty acids.
- Contains over 90% dv of the calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, thiamin, B6, folate, and B12 we need.

Egg yolks are high in good cholesterol. This cholesterol is crucial for helping your body create vitamin D. Not only do you need sunshine for vitamin D. you also need sunny egg yolks!
Egg yolks are high in lecithin which is is awesome for your liver.
Because the raw yolks contain enzymes important for digestion, many people with sensitivities to eggs are able to eat raw egg yolks and be fine. My breastfed babies are always sensitive to eggs and spit up horrible smelling yuckiness after I eat them. But I can drink eggnog and they are fine.
Finally, raw egg yolks are very gentle on the digestive system. Recommended by Dr Sears as an early food for babies, and also a first food in the GAPS diet for people trying to heal their gut.
So what about the egg whites?
Personally I don’t like them in my eggnog. Nutrition wise they simply don’t contain the nutrients that a yolk does and I prefer to use my egg whites to make other foods like my gluten free blueberry muffins for starters.
Okay! Now that I’ve shared why I love the raw egg yolk, how about that homemade eggnog recipe I promised you.
