Best Baby Oil ~DIY Herbal Infusion
What is the best baby oil? Probably the best is an all natural oil that both you and your baby love. ๐
For me the best baby oil is one I created by infusing herbs into a mixture of organic oils.ย Oils like olive and coconut and herbs like lavender, rose and others.
There are many benefits to making your own baby products. The number one benefit is if you make them, you control the ingredients and the quality. The other benefit is many times it’s cheaper to make your own, rather than buy a similar quality product already made. Of course, if you are shorter on time than money, buying a natural organic product is the way to go. ๐

Best Baby Oil Recipe:
- 2/3 cup organic coconut oil
- 2/3 cup organic olive oil (if you dislike the smell of olive oil, use grape seed oil instead)
- 1 cup of the organic baby bath herb blend. You can buy it at Bulk herb store, or use 1/4 cup each of Lavender, Rose petals, Rosemary, and Yarrow.
- 1/4 cup of calendula
The first thing you want to do is make sure your utensils are sterilized and dry. I used a quart jar for the infusion part and washed it in super hot water and then dried it completely. You want to make sure there is no water because the oils have a long shelf life and will preserve themselves and the herbs, but water will allow room for bacteria to grow.
There are 2 ways you can infuse your baby oil.
The first way is the slow way and probably preferred way by most avid herb users. Pour herbs and oils together into a quart jar, tightly screw the lid on and sit in a sunny window sill for 2-4 weeks.
The second way is a lot quicker. Like the first method, pour herbs and oils into your jar and tightly seal. Then place it in your oven on 150 for 24 hours. I didn’t want to heat my oils quite that high and my oven only goes down to 170, so I put my jar into the dehydrator on 120 for 24 hours.
Once the oil has been infused, you will want to strain out the herbs. You can use cheese cloth or a mesh strainer like the one I used. Again, make sure the jar you are pouring into is sterilized and dry. Gently press or squeeze the herbs to get as much oil as possible out of them.
Toss the used herbs and either cap the container you strained into, or pour into a different one that has also been sterilized. A dark, glass container is best.
That’s it! Now, enjoy rubbing the very best baby oil ever ๐ on you little one’s skin to keep it nice and moisturized! Or, rub it into hubby’s neck and shoulders after a rough day at work. And it goes without saying that you can also ask for the same in return!
The baby bath blend is the same blend that I used to make baby shampoo as well. If you want to learn how to make that, or just a little more about the herbs that are used in that blend, be sure to read my Make Your Own Baby Shampoo post.
Coconut oil is smooth and wonderful for the skin. The only reason I didn’t use all coconut oil is because coconut oil hardens easily and having the olive oil mixed in helps keep it fluid. Olive oil is thick and I feel that paired with coconut oil it is wonderful for the skin.
Calendula wasn’t part of the baby bath blend but after reading this month’s herbal magazine on how wonderful it is for the skin, I decided that it had to be added as well. ๐
Recipe makes a little over one cup of best baby oil.
